A recent observation of mine these days is that I’ve found it common, in these hard economical times, for young couples to fight through together. Due to the low number of jobs available and expensive living in all major Canadian cities. The high standards we (20-35 year old demographic) place on our selfs to have everything, look and dress a certain way, eat the right foods (organic/expensive), eat out don’t eat out, buy expensive coffee - it all adds up. We also feel high expectations from our baby boomer parents to succeed in this life, but at the same time “do whatever makes you happy hunnie” - thanks Mum.
So in my discovers I’ve noticed young couples achieving most of these events by sticking together; live together, rent is always cheaper when your sharing a bed. Grocery shop together, more affordable when your splitting the bill and it’s much nicer cooking for more then one person. And then theres the overall support; mentally and physically, in the sense that someone to help cook (or cook for you hehe), help clean, do laundry together. Young people are domesticating early in a modern sense being that majority of the individuals in the relationship that I’ve crossed paths with are/can be independent from there spouse. This is not because society is demanding us to domesticat, as like in the 60‘s, but because its giving us no choice in the matter.

Evidence: I was at the grocery store and my cashier was pleased to announce that he was getting off his shift in half an hour. I asked him why he was working? Maybe a strange question, but to me I’m always working for something; travel, school, just to live is a perfectly accurate answer as well. He said he was putting his girl friend through school, or rather supporting the living costs. And the plan is that when she’s finished she’ll return the favour. I hope it works out for them.
I am also currently living with a couple who have been together for two years now. And two years isn’t a very long time (in retrospect to my parents 25 years of marriage) to know someone. It’s definitely a personal choice to live together and by all means go for it. It also makes economical sense. What I found super cool was that they share a cellphone - how amazing is that!?
My own experience with this theory is with Mr. Bushman, who has been out in BC all year. Even though we are four provinces apart, a 5 hour flight, a 4 day drive and a 3 hour time difference - whatever way you want to look at, it its been amazing to have support all school year long.
Sooooo why not? I’m not saying every couple should shack up. But if the cookie crumbles that way then why not? You share the sam values, enjoy the same activities, can be independent from each other, why not save some money whilst trying to survive this jungle. No ones talking about marriage - theres enough time for that. It’s just a simple quick rant/theory on todays young couples.
